Miller Reese Hutchinson, Hearing Aids, and Becoming a Great Hearer (Listener)!

Miller Reese Hutchinson, Hearing Aids, and Becoming a Great Hearer (Listener)!

I can’t hear you!

Sergeant Vince Carter of the old Gomer Pyle USMC series vehemently mouthed those words in the ears of his young Marine recruits.

But those same words are spoken daily by people, like me, who have decreasing auditory skills.

According to HLAA, about 1 in 7 people in the United States have some form of hearing loss.

That’s tragic!

But the encouraging news is that help is available.

It’s called HEARING AIDS.

Hearing aids … they really do aid a person in hearing again.

They give you a second chance to hear birds sing sweetly in the morning.

They allow you to hear your son or daughter say, “I love you,” without asking “what?"

Hearing aids permit you to engage in conversation without draping a puzzled look and guessing what was said.

I recently caved and bought a pair of Jabra hearing aids from Costco.

I’m now enjoying the sweet sounds of life again.

And it’s due to an inventor by the name of Miller Reese Hutchinson, who invented the first electrical hearing aids in 1898.

They were known as Akouphones.

His creation was the first to use battery-operated electrical current in the treatment of hearing loss.

Just think of the conversational clarity that exists in homes today because of Hutchinson’s ingenuity.

Think of the increased productivity in workplaces because errors in communication are prevented.

And do you want to know even a greater benefit of wearing hearing aids?

It’s a reduction in the risk of Dementia.

That’s right, there’s a link between hearing loss and Dementia.

Now that I’ve encouraged all deficient hearers to get hearing aids, I want to reroute your attention for a few moments.

Stay with me, okay?

I’m not talking about the ability to hear sounds and assemble them into words.

What I’m referring to is the rare and exemplary skill of gifting total attention to others during conversations.

Talented hearers (or listeners) are a scarcity today.

So many times, we can’t wait to interrupt, interject, and invade a conversation.

Instead, we should patiently hear the thoughts, concerns, and plans of others.

Investing yourself in this trait will reap you trustworthiness and respect.

It'll strengthen your relationships socially and vocationally.

Here’s a Principle, a Plan, a Positive Approach, and a Podcast that expounds on how hearing others will expand your personal growth.

Principle

Being able to hear others goes far beyond the inner ear.

Plan

Resist the urge to add rushed commentary in conversations. Practice active listening. Do this for a week, listening attentively to family members. After a week, venture out among friends. Then widen your circle (co-workers, fellow churchgoers, etc.). You'll become a habitual listener.

A Positive Approach

Open your ears and heart to others. You'll be giving a present that money can't buy. There are scores of people who need you to hear them!

A Podcast

Give an ear to this amazing YouTube on The Power of Listening by William Ury, an author and expert negotiator.
